In 1960, a Swiss expedition led by Max Eiselin became the first team to summit Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world at 8,167 metres. Every member wore a Certina DS. It kept time.

That reputation was earned, not claimed. First developed in the mid-1950s, the Double Security system is exactly what the name promises: an elastic shock absorber ring, an air gap between dial and case acting as a cushion, the Inabloc shock absorber, a reinforced screw-down caseback with the iconic turtle engraving, additional sealing throughout, and an extra-thick plexiglass crystal. Layer after layer of protection built into a watch that still looks like a dress piece. The Calibre 25-651 inside carries the Swiss Patent tied to the shock mount system registered in 1958 and used in DS production from the early 1960s onward. The DS ceased production in 1968 with the arrival of the DS 2, making this reference a clean chapter in Certina history.
